Insidious: Out of the Further is a Flawed Supernatural Curiosity
Insidious: Out of the Further (2026) has a few spooky, atmospheric sequences but ultimately can’t handle the weight it puts on its mythology. The idea of a mother traversing our world and The Further has some potential, but the film often fails to capture dread with a ton of similarly paced, supernatural jump scares.
The Duality of the Further
Gemma Hall’s method for pulling spirits into our world is a creative way to set the series apart from similar works. Dave Garbett uses sickly yellow and deep shadow tones to develop a style that draws from his previous efforts and adds some level of consistency, albeit that the scares feel a bit stale. There may be some level of comfort in the familiar, but the film strays a bit from predictability with the dentist-themed cult subplot, which, while bizarre, feels fresh in comparison to the standard haunted house movie. Critics have noted that the story is lacking, but the discomfort from watching the scenes is more impactful than the films of the series that lack substance and are largely driven by spirits.
Performances and Pacing Hurdles
Amelia Eve’s portrayal carries the film with intensity that helps illustrate the supernatural urgency of her character. Even if the script then has her do questionable things, she’s still brilliant. Lin Shaye is the heart of the series. While this role seems to be more of a structural requirement than a true evolution of her character, she still maintains her role well.
The film loses itself in the second act as it tries to explain the motivations of the cult with exposition that drags on. Sam Spruell’s performance is as campy as they come, with a liberal dosing of villainy that provides little to no real tension. The stealth elements of this story fail to truly land as a result.
Verdict for Genre Enthusiasts
This entry is best reserved for players who value lore building. If you’re looking for a tight, self-contained story, you’ll find the plot has numerous narrative loops and is, generally, average at best. If that is the case, then this film serves as an accurate reflection of the series as a whole.
This entry isn’t the best for lean and unpredictable horror. It takes the tried and true path instead, adding little to nothing to the series. It’s functional, but ultimately a hollow entry to the series.

(Spoilers ahead) The barrier between worlds isn’t really a barrier because Gemma’s actions treated her home as a permanent gateway to other worlds. Gemma’s actions permanently change the stakes of the franchise because now Evil is beginning to show its powers in our world. This means that future conflicts are not going to revolve around exorcisms, but rather, keeping Evil contained. This essentially means that the world is going to be permanently infested and the characters are not prepared in the slightest to keep evil in check.
