Sex/Life (2021) is a vacuous exercise in melodrama

This show focuses on the balance between domestic life and unfulfilled desires. Unfortunately, the lack of plot ruins the show. Although the story of a suburban mom and the haunting memories of her past creates an intricate and interesting character, the show refuses to build the actual plot and gives more emphasis to beautiful photography over important plot moments and dramatic character development.

When Sensuality Overshadows Substance

The series tends to think it is developing characters when it includes prolonged sex scenes that are actually detrimental. The audience is left focusing mainly on surface-level tensions. The protagonist’s sexual obsession is what the writers are busy with, and they don’t give Billie the agency or internal flow to make a compelling arc. Because of the writing, the character’s abruptness in determining motivation is not deep and is more frustrating. The critical consensus is the show kills itself and its potential, however, the cast sometimes are able to give great performances within the limiting thin script. Sarah Shahi gives the audience something to care about, and something visceral when she is the focus of the scene, although the story tries to keep her character stuck in a loop of intense, impulsive, self-destructive behavior.

The Chasm Between Premise and Execution

The central love triangle is not promising. The dry presentation of the husband and wife leaves the appearance of the ex-lover less a tragedy and more a boring outcome of the husband and wife’s poor communication. The show relies on infidelity to further the plot rather than focusing on the human side of why a character would destroy their own life.

Some enjoy the chaos and the bold focus on the characters’ desires. The protagonists have such poor character design most people will not care about the outcome of the show. The show is great as a background distraction. Ignore the ridiculous plot holes.

Evaluating the Target Audience

Viewers who appreciate character-driven dramas involving characters who undergo emotional growth should look elsewhere, as this show has plotlines in which characters do not face consequences for their actions. This show is best enjoyed by audiences who like to escape reality with their shows. Sticking to the moment and the dramas of relationships is more important to this show than logical discrepancies involving human connections.

If slightly more thought and cohesion is the standard to which you hold your dramas, I’d suggest looking elsewhere. Maybe you need something too keep you occupied until your favorite dramatic series returns, but beware—if you don’t look carefully, you might find this show to be hollow and boring.

What works

  • Sarah Shahi provides a committed, intense lead performance
  • High-gloss production values and aesthetic presentation
  • Maintains a consistent, if superficial, tone throughout

What falls short

  • Protagonist motivations are inconsistent and erratic
  • Over-reliance on sexual interludes at the expense of plot
  • Lack of sympathetic or well-developed characters

What critics said

“Suffocating its more provocative ideas with steamy interludes and melodramatic writing, this erotic drama is too obsessed with sex to ever fully come to life.”
