Baki Hanma is a Visceral Spectacle for Dedicated Genre Fans
Baki Hanma (2021)
Baki Hanma (2021) is a hyper-stylized exercise in escalating absurdity that rewards viewers who prioritize kinetic energy over narrative logic. By transplanting the protagonist into the brutal confines of Arizona State Prison, the series successfully recalibrates its stakes into a claustrophobic, high-impact arena.
An authentic fan of ‘Baki’ would appreciate that this series is inspired by the measure of kinetic energy. ‘Baki’s’ and the ‘Hanma’ worlds collide literally in the middle of Arizona State Prison’s Arena.
The Anatomy of Pure Kineticism
The series’ strongest points are the extreme anatomical exaggeration and the heavy combat animation. Noguchi’s camera work transforms the manga’s sharp and muscular style into an incredibly smooth animation. Every strike of the characters’ combat animation will shake the very earth.
Many action series rely on standard choreography, but this series treats the human body like a highly advanced weapon that continues to evolve. The introduction of characters like Pickle will stretch the logic to its breaking point, but the fluidity of the animation guarantees that the visuals remain impactful and exciting even in the case of highly extreme and stupidly farcesque plot developments.
Where the Narrative Stalls
Some will say Baki’s Daddy Issues are the heart of the series. I think the heart of the series is the stimulating choreography and the creative, over-the-top violence. And, while I sometimes enjoy a good monologue, the sense of narration in this series is intrusive and interferes with momentum. It becomes worse during the intense scenes where violence is more explosive and should not need spectacle to be shown.
The series is best without the melodrama because it is the creative, over the top, stimulating violence that draws in the audience. Without serious drama, the series indulges in a pure sensory experience. The fights are the main draw.
Targeting the Right Audience
This series is for viewers who enjoy extreme sci-fi fantasy and extreme martial arts. If you have fun seeing how far an animation studio can take the limits of the human body, you will be entertained by the increasingly powerful characters in the 24 minute episodes. If, however, you need a more grounded story that has a more subtle character plot, this anime will not satisfy you. This show is unapologetically loud and ridiculous so don’t go in to the show expecting a deep and subtle exploration of the themes in the show. think the show is just about unapologetic displays of physical strength and dominance.
